Nakuru National Park was established in 1961 and covers 188 square kilometers offering protection to the salty Lake Nakuru in the rift valley of Kenya with algae attracting a variety of pink flamingoes and other bird species like Goliath Heron, pied kingfisher, Verreuax’s eagle and hamerkop commonly spotted ashore. The wildlife here include warthogs, baboons and large mammals like black and white rhinoceros introduced in a rhino sanctuary, Rothschild giraffes, waterbucks, and predators like lions, cheetahs and leopards are often in the present days.

Birds
The park is famous for its numerous pink flamingoes and other bird species like pied kingfisher, Verreuax’s eagle, hamerkop, Goliath Heron and the African fish eagle among other existing species. This is one of the birders’ Paradise in Kenya.
Activities in Lake Nakuru National Park

  • Game drives

Morning, evening and night game drives are arranged for the visitors of the park to spot their desired game through the tracks in the park. The nocturnal predators like leopards and lions can be spoted in the night as they hunt for their prey in the park and other game commonly sighted are the warthogs, baboons and large mammals like black and white rhinoceros, Rothschild giraffes, buffaloes, vervet monkeys, hyenas and waterbucks.

  • Birding

For the bird lovers, this is absolutely the perfect place to carry out a birding activity along the shores of the lake where the pink flamingoes are common hunting for small fish and other bird species often viewed are the pied kingfisher, Verreuax’s eagle, hamerkop, Goliath Heron and the African fish eagle among others.

  • Boat Cruise

Enjoy an afternoon boat cruise in Lake Nakuru as you enjoy viewing the pink flamingos play above the water and crocodiles along the shores of the lake not forgetting the hippos. This activity will give you an opportunity to enjoy photography while on board.

  • Nature Walks

Visitors can walk on foot in the company of the game ranger along recommended trails around the park to get colder to some of the attractions in the park like the Rhino Sanctuary protecting the endangered black and white rhinoceros and the Giraffe sanctuary protecting the endangered Rothschild’s giraffes as well as reaching the shores of the salty lake. With this nature walk, al the flora and fauna can be closely studied.
