Mount Kenya National Park is a park in Kenya established in 1949 on an area of 715 square kilometers protecting Mount Kenya known to be the highest mountain in Kenya and 2nd highest in Africa after Mount Kilimanjaro, wildlife and its environs. The entire surrounding was initially a forest reserve before a park being announced inside and combined together to be a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.
Wildlife
The wildlife animals occupying this park include black and white colobus monkeys, white tailed mongoose, black-fronted duiker, leopards, giant forest hog, hyrax, black rhinoceros elephants, cape buffaloes and lions among others.
Birds
The park hosts several rare bird species like Ayre’s Hawk Eagle, Black stork, Red Fronted Parrots, Green Ibis Common snipe, Mountain Buzzard, Bronze napped pigeon Mountain white-eye, Green Ibis, Lesser Spotted Eagle, Harrier Hawk, Rufous Sparrow hawk, Abbots Starling, Sharpe’s Starling, Mountain Oriole and Thick-billed seedeater.
Activities in Mount Kenya National Park

  • Mountain climbing/hiking

There are several routes but Chogoria route is considered the best route as you walk while viewing the most beautiful attractions like the beautiful Alpine lake in the forest close to the Meru Bandas (3000m) and you proceed through Mugi hills and Lake Ellis on a 4x4 drives which  make it a bit shorter. The Chogoria route is the longest of all routes but has the best attractions before you the final destination up which is the Old Moses camp then start descending 1,685m, 24km to Sirimon gate.

  • Game viewing

With the magnificent view of Mount Kenya in place, game drives in search for the park’s game becomes fantastic and you will come across the elephants, hyrax, black rhinoceros elephants, cape buffaloes, black and white colobus monkeys, white tailed mongoose, black-fronted duiker and occasionally, leopards and lions are spotted especially during the night.

  • Bird Watching

Birding is one of the booming activities here and attract several birders worldwide who come for a bird walk expecting to encounter bird species like Rufous Sparrow hawk, Abbots Starling, Sharpe’s Starling Ayre’s Hawk Eagle, Black stork, Red Fronted Parrots, Green Ibis Common snipe, Mountain Buzzard, Bronze napped pigeon Mountain white-eye, Green Ibis, Lesser Spotted Eagle, Harrier Hawk, Mountain Oriole and Thick-billed seedeater. This activity takes in the montane forest areas of the park.
