Maasai Mara National Reserve is a game reserve established in 1961 as a wildlife sanctuary eating up only 520 square kilometers of the current area with the Mara Triangle included but the area was later extended to the east in 1961 to cover 1,821 square kilometers and changed to a game reserve.  This large reserve is located in Narok County in Kenya, adjoining the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. It was named to honor the Maasai people who are the ancestral inhabitants of the area and their description of it when looked at from a distance: "Mara" in Maa (Maasai language) translates to "spotted," a description for the gathering of trees, scrub, savanna, and cloud shadows in this area.
Wildlife like lions, leopards and cheetahs among others can be spotted here and the yearly migration of zebra, Thomson’s gazelles, and wildebeest to and from the Serengeti every year from July to October can as well be experienced not forgetting an estimated 500 bird species in the reserve.
Wildlife
The game in Maasai Mara Reserve include the lions, elephants, leopards, warthogs, hyenas, giraffes, silver back jackals, wildebeests, Thompson’s gazelles, hippos, zebras, baboons and crocodiles among others. Game drives can be organized for the visitors to view all these game in the company of a professional game ranger.
Birds
Lilac-breasted Roller, long-billed pipit, bare-faced bird, rufous-crowned roller, Eastern plantain-eater, Secretary Birds, Kori Bustards, Ground Hornbills, Crowned Crested Cranes, the Goliath Heron, Grey Heron, Black-headed Heron and Great White Egret are a few of the many birds that exist in the Mara Conservancy.

  • Game drives

Your visit to Mara is incomplete without going for a game drive or safari both morning and evening or choose a night game drive to view the nocturnal game like leopards and lions. Other game like silver back jackals, wildebeests, Thompson’s gazelles, hippos, zebras, baboons and crocodiles among others can easily be spotted.

Bird lovers can visit the Mara Conservancy to view the birds and enjoy photography. Birds like Kori Bustards, Ground Hornbills, Crowned Crested Cranes, the Goliath Heron, Grey Heron, Black-headed Heron and Great White Egret are the most common ones to spot.
