Hell’s gate National Park was established in 1984 and covers 68.25 square kilometers south of Lake Naivasha and it is named after a narrow break in the cliffs and once a tributary of a prehistoric lake that fed early humans in the Rift Valley, this place offers magnificently beautiful sceneries like water gouged gouges, volcanoes, stark rock towers and wildlife animals that include the zebras, buffalos, gazelles and hartebeests with 3 basic campsites and a Maasai Cultural Center providing educational information about the Maasai culture, lifestyle and traditions. There are at least 103 bird species reported in this park like the vultures, Verreaux’s eagles, swifts and augur buzzard among others.
Wildlife
Predators like lions, leopard, cheetahs and hyenas are abundant here and other game including zebras, buffalos, gazelles, elands, klipspringer antelopes, servals, reedbuck and hartebeests are easily spotted in this park during organized game drives.
Birds
Out of the estimated 103 bird species controlling the skies of Hell’s Gate National Park, a few of them can be mention here and they include swifts, augur buzzard, vultures, Verreaux’s eagles, secretary bird, Northern ant eater, weaver birds and fiscal among others spotting during birding activities.
Activities in Hell’s Gate National Park

  • Game viewing

There are abundant game to look out for during a game drive in the park which include zebras, buffalos, gazelles, elands, klipspringer antelopes, servals, reedbuck and hartebeests and predators like the lions, leopard, cheetahs and hyenas are unpredictable because of their nocturnal nature but night game drives can be organized and visitors may spot them while they hunt for their prey.

  • Birding

Have a chance to go for bird watching as you identify the different bird species Kenya is blessed to have and some the 103 bird species here include swifts, augur buzzard, vultures, Verreaux’s eagles, secretary bird, Northern ant eater, weaver birds and fiscal with an option of reaching Lake Naivasha to watch the estimated 400 bird species in the lake and along the shores.

Hell’s gate National Park is home to Ol Karia famous for its geothermal spa which gives recreational and therapeutic swimming with its Blue Lagoons whose waters are naturally heated, with temperatures ranging from 30°c to 40°c suitable for humans to swim in it.

  • Climb Mount Longonot

It takes visitors about 28km away from Naivasha town to reach Mt. Longonot spotted when driving into the Great Rift Valley as it rises from the floor of the Rift Valley. Hikers can always warm up their adrenaline and spot the park from above.
